Most GOP state senators want Sanford out (07/01/09)

The following have called for Gov. Mark Sanford’s resignation:

U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett (R-Westminster); President of the South Carolina New Democrats Phil Noble; Sen. David Thomas (R-Greenville); Senate Majority Leader Harvey Peeler (R-Gaffney); Senate Finance Committee Chairman Hugh Leatherman (R-Florence); Chairman of Senate Rules Committee Sen. Larry Martin (R-Pickens); Sen. Kevin Bryant, (R-Anderson); Sen. Thomas Alexander, (R-Walhalla); Sen. William O'Dell, (R-Ware Shoals); Sen. Jake Knotts (R-West Columbia); Sen. Paul Campbell, (R-Berkeley); Chairman of Senate Transportation Committee Sen. Larry Grooms, (R-Berkeley); and Rep. William Sandifer, (R-Seneca); Sen. Vincent Sheheen, (D-Camden); Rep. Eric Bedingfield, (R-Ware Shoals).

The following have said they are not calling for Sanford to resign:

House Speaker Bobby Harrell (R-Charleston); and former House Speaker Rex Carter (D-Greenville); Sen. Danny Verdin (R- Laurens). U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint, (R-SC); Senate President Pro Tempore Glenn McConnell (R-Charleston); U.S. Rep. Bob Inglis (R-Travelers Rest).

The following have called for a SLED investigation or review of the matter:

Attorney General Henry McMaster (R); chairwoman of the SC Democratic Party Carol Fowler;

The following newspapers have called on the governor to step aside:

The Greenville News, The Herald-Journal of Spartanburg, The Herald of Rock Hill, the Morning News of Florence and The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg.
